InspirationI got my inspiration from a picture online of a green tray that connects through and arm to a smaller bowl that was blue (ish) colored. The extension was textured and colored to look like a root. In the process of Attempting to make that, a class mate suggested a celestial theme. I fell in love with the idea and decided to work off of that. (Thanks Ethan!) ProcessI started my piece by making the tray (moon) portion. I made both of the pieces on the wheel, and this was my first time on the wheel. I had no idea how much clay to use, so I just grabbed some white clay that was already in a ball about the size of my fist and soft enough to use. Ms. Sudkamp came over to help me with it being my first time throwing anything on the wheel. We beat the clay into a shape that resembles a cone and threw (with force) it on to roughly the center of the wheel. Next, at low speed, I used my finger to smear the bottom of the clay on the top of the wheel so it didn't go flying off. After that, by applying force in and down at near full speed, I centered the clay. From there I kept a fairly consistent speed as I pulled out and up to form the shape of the clay, occasionally adding water if I felt it drying out. I repeated this process for the bowl. After that was done and they were both bisque fired in the kiln, I gave them each a coat of white glaze. Then I layered different black and grays to make the moon and give it texture. On the galaxy bowl, I sponged a could white spirals with light orange on the outside and speckled a couple flecks with a wet paintbrush to try to get the "galaxy" look.
